What are Dermal Fillers?
Dermal fillers are gel-like substances that can be injected beneath the skin to help restore lost volume, soften the appearance of lines, or enhance facial contours.
At HEMAC Aesthetic & Skin Clinic in Hawthorn East, we use hyaluronic acid (HA)-based fillers, which are biodegradable and naturally found in the body where they help retain moisture and hydration.
How do they work?
- A soft gel is injected into targeted areas using fine needles or cannulas.
- The filler integrates into the skin, supporting volume and hydration.
- Effects are temporary and vary between individuals, as fillers gradually dissolve over time.
- Treatments are tailored to individual needs and may be used alone or alongside other procedures such as anti-wrinkle injections or skin treatments.
Common Treatment Areas
Dermal fillers may be considered for:
- Cheeks and cheekbones
- Lips and perioral area (around the mouth)
- Chin and jawline
- Nasolabial folds (smile lines)
- Tear troughs (under the eyes)
- Volume restoration in areas affected by ageing
What to Expect
- Mild swelling, redness, or bruising may occur at the injection sites and usually resolves within days.
- Small lumps or unevenness can occur initially but often settle on their own.
- A follow-up review is usually recommended at 2 weeks.
- In rare cases, fillers can be dissolved using a reversal injection if required.
Safety and Suitability
Not everyone is suitable for filler treatments. They may not be recommended for patients who:
- Are pregnant or breastfeeding
- Have active infections such as cold sores
- Have a history of severe allergies or chronic infections
- Are taking certain medications (e.g., blood thinners, corticosteroids, NSAIDs)
Risks include swelling, bruising, infection, allergic reactions, or, rarely, vascular complications. All procedures are performed by trained medical practitioners in a sterile environment.
